Verizon has just announced that they are ready to push out a new update for their first (and only ? at least for the moment) 4G LTE phone, the HTC ThunderBolt. The update was leaked out last week through a ROM, but as of today, Verizon officially announced it through a pdf on its website.The software update is said to improve the phone’s 3G connection, organize its text messages better, gain better access to some apps, and the usual performance enhancements. No date was mentioned in the pdf but we should expect the update to arrive pretty soon. The announcement/launch date of the HTC Trophy arriving on Verizon has been talked about many times but yet we’re still to see the device on sale at Big Red. But all that might change very soon. Word has been going around stating that Verizon employees have started receiving Windows Phone 7 training to learn about the operating system in order to deal with customers.Here’s what a tweet that was sent over to the folks over at wpcentral recently said: “@wpcentral Roomate works at Verizon, just txt me saying he has a 1 hour training today for WP7!” The folks over at wpcentral have also speculated a May 12 launch date which seems just about right. In an effort to be “clear and transparent” with its customers and the government, Verizon Wireless has sent a letter to Congress detailing plans on how it will better inform consumers about location data collection on their smartphones. The wireless carrier will soon apply a removable stickers to its devices with the following warning: “This device is capable of determining its (and your) physical, geographical, location adn can associate location data with other customer information. To limit access to location information by others, refer to the User Guide for Location settings and be cautious when downloading, accessing, or using applications and services.” Verizon Wireless will also issue alerts more clearly in its V CAST applications, some of which can be.

See that rather ominous warning label above? That’s a new sticker that will soon be placed directly on the screen of every new device Verizon Wireless sells. Contrary to what you might suspect, however, that’s not being done in response to the most recent iPhone 4 tracking fiasco. The label was revealed in a letter to Representatives Ed Markey and Joe Barton, who themselves sent a letter to Verizon (and the three other major carriers) on March 29th inquiring about a New York Times story that raised concerns about how carriers collect and store personal location data. As for the other carriers’ responses, they apparently aren’t going as far as Verizon has with its warning label, but they do mostly echo Verizon’s response in other respects. They all say, for instance, that personal data is secured by a variety of means and stored only as long as needed (which can apparently vary by carrier, though), that they don’t rent or sell personal information, and that they request customer consent before accessing location data. Despite those assurances, however, Rep. Markey says he’s still left with a “feeling of uneasiness and uncertainty,” and he’s pointing a finger at third-party developers in particular, who he says must be held “accountable.”Verizon says it will put location warning labels on all phones sold originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 11:11:00 EDT.
